Children's eye care
Children's eyes are still developing, and a young child will rarely say that something looks wrong. A test can pick up problems early, when they are easiest to help.
When to come
- Every child should have an eye test before starting school, and then about every year or two as your optometrist advises.
- Come sooner if your child sits very close to the TV, squints, rubs their eyes a lot, complains of headaches, or if there is a squint or lazy eye in the family.
What to expect
We take our time. Tests for young children use pictures and games, so your child does not need to read. You can stay with them and we can break it into two shorter goes. Dr Patel has a particular interest in children's eyes and Saturday appointments are with Dr Shah.
Cost
Eye tests are free on the NHS for under 16s, and for under 19s in full-time education. Children also receive an NHS optical voucher towards glasses if they need them: see NHS eye tests.
Glasses for children
Jo chooses frames that stay on, are flexible and hard to break, and we guarantee them for 12 months. See children's glasses. For more, read our journal post on eye tests before school.
