NHS eye tests and vouchers
Who qualifies for a free NHS eye test
In England, you can have an NHS-funded eye test if you:
- are under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
- are 60 or over
- are 40 or over and your parent, brother, sister or child has glaucoma
- have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
- are registered as sight impaired or severely sight impaired
- are advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
- receive certain benefits, such as Universal Credit (with qualifying earnings), Income Support or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, or are named on an NHS tax credit exemption certificate
- hold an NHS low-income certificate (HC2 or HC3)
The rules change from time to time, so check NHS guidance or ask us. If you are not sure, ask when you book; we will check with you at the desk.
NHS optical vouchers
Some people also get a voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses. The value depends on your prescription. Under-16s, for example, receive a voucher that covers a basic pair, and a higher value if the prescription is strong. Bring your voucher to a glasses fitting or to Jo, who will take the value off the total. The voucher does not cover the whole price of every frame, and Jo will explain what is included before you order.
If you do not qualify
You can have a private eye test for £25. It is longer, includes a digital retinal scan and is open to everyone.
What the NHS test includes
The test checks your sight and the health of your eyes. If you need glasses, you get a prescription whether or not you buy from us.
