Eye tests
A regular eye test checks your vision and the health of your eyes. It can pick up changes in your eyes, and sometimes in your general health, before you notice anything yourself.
NHS and private tests
| Test | Length | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| NHS eye test | 30 minutes | Free if you qualify (see who does) |
| Private eye test | 45 minutes | £25, paid in store |
| Children's eye test | 30 minutes | Free on the NHS for under 16s |
The private test includes a digital retinal scan. You can book either online, choosing an optometrist or the next one available.
What happens
- A short chat about your sight, your health and how you use your eyes day to day.
- Checks of how well you see, how your eyes work together and how they focus.
- A look at the health of the front and back of your eyes.
- Your optometrist explains what they found and, if you need glasses, writes your prescription.
Nothing hurts. Some checks use a puff of air or a bright light, and some patients have drops to widen the pupils. We tell you before anything happens.
Before you come
- Bring your glasses and contact lenses, and your last prescription.
- Tell us about any medicines you take and any changes in your sight.
- If you need step-free access or a hearing loop, say so when you book. See accessibility.
Want more than a test? We also run a contact lens clinic, a dry eye clinic and OCT scans. Prices are on one page.
